Let’s Talk SPF: Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen
As we move through these warm summer months, one thing remains non-negotiable: daily sun protection.
But not all SPF is created equal — especially when it comes to sensitive or reactive skin. Understanding the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens can make all the difference in how your skin tolerates protection.
Mineral (Physical) Sunscreens
Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to sit on top of the skin and physically reflect UV rays. Because they don’t absorb into the skin, they’re often the better choice for:
Sensitive skin
Rosacea
Eczema
Post-treatment skin (like after peels or facials)
These formulas are generally less likely to cause irritation and begin working immediately after application.
Chemical Sunscreens
Chemical SPFs work by absorbing into the skin and converting UV rays into heat, which is then released from the body. Common active ingredients include avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octinoxate.
While these formulas tend to feel lighter and blend in more easily on deeper skin tones, they can sometimes trigger irritation — especially for compromised or inflamed skin types.
My Recommendation?
For clients managing conditions like rosacea, eczema, or post-inflammatory flare-ups, I always recommend mineral-based sunscreens. They’re gentler on the skin barrier and far less likely to exacerbate redness, stinging, or reactivity.
That said, the best sunscreen is the one you’ll wear consistently — but it should also work with your skin, not against it.
One More Thing: Let’s Be Skin- and Earth-Conscious
As you're choosing your SPF, consider where you’ll be wearing it. If you’re spending time in the ocean, lakes, or natural waterways, opt for reef-safe or ocean-friendly mineral sunscreens that are free from ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been linked to environmental harm.
Being mindful of the ingredients we wear while swimming helps protect marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and aquatic life — and it’s a simple way we can glow responsibly.
